A Beginner’s Guide to Installing Gypsum Partitions

Gypsum partitions have become a go-to solution for interior remodeling and space management in Kenya. Whether you’re creating office cubicles, a home study, or simply dividing a large room, gypsum partitions are quick to install, lightweight, cost-effective, and offer a sleek modern finish.

At Morgdan Construction and Interiors Ltd, we often guide our clients through DIY installation or offer professional services depending on the scale and precision needed. If you're a beginner considering installing gypsum walls, this comprehensive guide will help you get started the right way.

“Gypsum partitions offer flexibility and functionality—perfect for both commercial and residential interiors in Kenya.” – Morgdan Construction Team

Step 1: Gather the Right Tools and Materials

Before installation, ensure you have:

  • Gypsum boards (standard 8ft x 4ft)
  • Metal studs and tracks (usually 50mm or 75mm)
  • Screws, screw gun, and wall plugs
  • Tape measure, spirit level, plumb line
  • Utility knife or gypsum saw
  • Joint filler compound and joint tape
  • Protective gear (gloves, mask, goggles)

Step 2: Mark the Partition Layout

Use a chalk line or laser to mark where your partition will go. Mark both the floor and ceiling lines to ensure straight alignment. Remember to account for door openings or electrical provisions.

Step 3: Fix the Perimeter Tracks

Attach the metal U-tracks to the floor and ceiling along your marked lines using screws and wall plugs. These tracks hold the vertical studs and form the skeleton of your partition.

Step 4: Install Vertical Studs

Place metal studs vertically inside the tracks at 600mm intervals. Ensure they are plumb (perfectly vertical) using a level. These provide the framework onto which the gypsum boards will be fixed.

Step 5: Fix the Gypsum Boards

Screw the gypsum boards onto the framework using drywall screws. Start from the bottom and work your way up. Stagger the joints for better strength and visual appeal. For thicker or soundproof partitions, use double-layered boards.

Step 6: Taping and Jointing

Apply joint tape over all visible seams, then spread joint filler compound using a drywall knife. Let it dry, then apply a second coat if necessary. Sand the joints smooth to prepare for painting.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Once the surface is smooth and dry, you can paint the gypsum wall or apply wallpaper for a stylish finish. Be sure to apply a primer before the final coat of paint for best results.

Bonus Tips:

  • Use moisture-resistant gypsum boards in kitchens or bathrooms.
  • Add insulation between the partitions for soundproofing.
  • Hide wiring or pipework before sealing the wall.

Whether you're in Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret, or Mombasa, gypsum partitioning is one of the easiest ways to create functional spaces with style. With a bit of planning and the right materials, even beginners can achieve professional-looking results.
